The sovereign territorial area of continental and island land is 22,402,200 square kilometers, including the area of the White Sea (90 thousand square kilometers) and the Sea of Azov (37.3 thousand square kilometers)

The USSR borders by land with 12 states: in the West - with Norway, Finland, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Romania; in the South – with Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, the Chinese People's Republic, the Mongolian People's Republic and the Korean People's Democratic Republic. The total length of the state borders is over 60 thousand kilometers (one and a half times more than the length of the equator).

The sovereign territory of the USSR is washed by 12 seas belonging to the basins of 3 oceans - the Arctic, Atlantic and Pacific.

The sovereign territory of the USSR is located in Asia (about 75% of the area) - the Asian part of the Soviet Union, and in Europe (about 25%) - the European part of the Soviet Union. The northernmost point of the USSR on the mainland is Cape Chelyuskin (77°43' N), on the islands - Cape Fligeli on Rudolf Island (81°49' N); the southernmost point is the village of Childkhter near the city of Kushka (35°08' N). The extent of the territory from North to South is about 5 thousand kilometers, almost twice the distance between its western and eastern borders - from the Baltic Spit in the Gdansk Bay of the Baltic Sea (19° 38' E) to Cape Dezhnev (169°40' W); the easternmost point of the country is Ratmanov Island in the Bering Strait (169°02' W). There are 11 time zones on the sovereign territory of the USSR.
